Page 3 - Taking Part in the S.F.A. Feeding Programs

At Chekombero School S.F.A. sponsors food for the children. Most  of the students are orphaned or come from destitute families. We watched the  children line up with excitement for their midday meal of rice and beans.

A smile speaks a thousand words. Our administrator at Chekombero, David the principal, told us that  some children would sneak back into school at the weekend because there is food there and none at home.

Famine has been declared a National Emergency by the government of Kenya. Hunger and starvation  are very real due to three years of drought, depleted soil and failed  harvests. Everywhere we went we saw the fear of hunger..

At Emalindi and Kayhega, S.F.A. runs food supplementation programs to assist orphans and vulnerable children. Increased funding for food has become our top priority for 2009/10.

Once a month the children and caregivers celebrate as they receive their food supplies. They enjoy bread and juice and support each other with music, songs and stories. We were deeply moved by their stories, their courage and their joyfulness. We learned to sing and dance with chickens ! We were the humble recipients of chickens, eggs, sugar cane and clay pots from the communities we visited. We TRIED to get the dancing part and shared much laughter with these good people.
Mukumu Children's Home  has now been added to our list of Feeding Programs. Here Grace cares for 32 abandoned or orphaned children at her home . The children sleep on the floor in 2 tiny rooms, with no blankets or beds  but they are loved and being raised as a family. They all call Grace "Mom". There is much to be done at Mukumu Home. S.F.A. volunteer Charlotte discovered this home while working at our projects in the winter of 2009. There was an emergency situation with no food. Here the latest food supplies are being delivered. Grace and her children wave their greetings and thanks to all of you, (sitting on their food sacks) !
